Answer : Hana was Sadao’s wife . He first met her in America at a professor’s house . They fell in love . Sadao told his father about Hana . Then theirmarriage was arranged in the old Japanese way . Hana was really a devoted wife .
What prompted Dr. Sadao to save the man’s life ?
Answer : Sadao was a doctor . He had been trained to save every life he could . He was true to his profession . Dedication to his profession prompted Sadao to save the man’s life though he belonged to his enemy country.

Answer : Hana is a young , delicate and beautiful woman She met Sadao in America at a professor’s house . She has two children . She has apparently inculcated humanistic values . She thought the best thing to deal with the American soldier was to throw him back into the sea . But she did not do so . Instead she suggested to carry the man inside . She washed the soldier when Yumi refused to do so . She helps her husband in operating on the wounded soldier . She gives the An patient anesthetic . She keeps up her dignity as the servants leave crying . She works hard to do her household work .
Do you think the doctor’s final solution to the problem was the best possible one in the circumstances ?
Answer : Yes , the doctor’s final solution to the problem was the best possible one in those circumstances , The supporting reasons are as follows :
The doctor wanted to get rid of the enemy soldier . His wound was satisfactorily healed up . But he was reluctant to leave the doctor’s house . The servants had left the doctor’s house . Hana , the doctor’s wife , was the greatest sufferer from the presence of the white man . She had to look after her children . She had to cook food for her family and the soldier . She had to serve food and other things to the soldiers . She asked the doctor again and again what he was going to do with the white man .
The General promised the doctor to send his own private assassins . The doctor was uneasy and restless for three nights . But no assassin turned up in the three nights . The General had forgotten An his promise .
His family life was badly disturbed . He was mentally upset . The servants would not return to work unless the white man leaves the house of the doctor . Then he forced the soldier to escape in his boat . He supplied him food , water , quilts in his boat . He guided him in the earnest way .
Hence it was the best possible solution in those circumstances to get rid of the enemy soldier .
What explains the attitude of the General in the matter of the enemy soldier ? Was it human consideration , lack of dereliction of duty or simply self – absorption ?
Introduction : When Dr. Sadao informed the general about the wounded white man , he said that he would allow nothing to happen to him . He could not be arrested . General’s promise : The General said that it would be best if he could be quietly killed . He send any had his own private assassins . He would two of them to his house that night or better , night . Dr. Sadao had to wait for three nights but nothing happened to the enemy soldier . General’s self absorption : Next time when Dr. Sadao went to visit the General , he informed that the enemy soldier had escaped . The General said that he had promised him that he would kill the soldier for the doctor . But the General was suffering a good deal . He thought of nothing but himself . He forgot his promise to the doctor .
Conclusion : The General said it was certainly very careless of him . It was not lack of patriotism or dereliction of duty . Thus it can be said that it was simply self – absorption that explains the attitude of the General in the matter of the enemy soldier .
Will Dr. Sadao be arrested on the charge of harbouring an enemy ?
Answer : It was the seventh day since Dr. Sadao had operated on the young white man . Early that morning , their three servants left together . In the afternoon , a messenger came there in official uniform . He told Dr. Sadao that he had to come to the palace at once as the old General was in pain again . Hana , who had thought that the officer had come to arrest Dr. Sadao , asked the messenger , ” Is that all ? ” The baffled messenger enquired if that was not enough . She tried to cover hér mistake by expressing regret and admitted that the General about the white man he had operated General’s illness was enough . Dr. Sadao told the on . Since Dr. Sadao was indispensable to the General , he promised that Dr. Sadao would not be arrested .
